Retirement Travel: How to Plan a Luxury African Safari for Less in Kruger and Victoria Falls
Companion Guide on our Retirement Travelers Website
retirementtravelers.com/ten-important-things-diy-african-safari-kruger
Planning a Luxury Safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa was very high on our bucket list, it’s been there since we were children, so we wanted to get it right, not cut corners, and have a spectacular experience seeing wildlife in their natural habitat. In the end, we did exactly that. We spent a week in Kruger National Park and added a weeklong trip to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Two action packed weeks of bucket list experiences.
One of the biggest misconceptions in planning an African safari is that you need to book through a tour operator to get the best experience. While we aren’t opposed to this plan, we just believed we could book a great safari, if we could figure out all the steps.
Today, we’re going to tell you how we did it, cutting out the middleman, creating a bucket list worthy trip with flexibly to do what we wanted to do, when we wanted to do it, all the while saving thousands of dollars.
We visited Cape Town, Kruger National Park, Victoria Falls, and Chobe National Park in Botswana and did all the planning through our local guides.
We’re going to show you all our choices and share all our costs, so while it may sound complicated on the surface, it is not. Trust us when we tell you, that if we can do it, so can you.

Overview of Kruger National Park:
Kruger National Park, located in northeastern South Africa, is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, spanning nearly 20,000 square kilometers. It was established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, it became the country's first national park in 1926. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and Cape buffaloes. Besides these iconic animals, Kruger is home to many species of flora and fauna, with over 500 bird species, 100 reptile species, and nearly 150 mammal species. The park's diverse ecosystems range from dense forests to grasslands and riverine systems, creating a dynamic environment for wildlife.
Visitors to Kruger National Park can engage in various activities, such as guided safaris and bush walks, offering different perspectives on the park's natural beauty. The park features several rest camps, luxury lodges, and camping sites to accommodate tourists. Kruger is also a site of significant archaeological interest, with numerous historical and cultural sites, including ancient rock paintings and Iron Age artifacts. The park plays a crucial role in conservation efforts and research, contributing to the protection and understanding of South Africa's wildlife and ecosystems. Its commitment to sustainable tourism and conservation has made Kruger National Park a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and a model for wildlife preservation worldwide.

    Thanks for the video. We are planning an extended family (7 total) trip to S Africa/Capetown with a cruise from Cape town to Europe which was inspired by your trip. I'm curious about the cost of your safari. The video says you paid $500/day for the 2 of you and $1895 total for 7 days. Did i miss something since $500×7 equals more than $1895. Thank you!

      Hope you have a wonderful trip. The $1895 is per person for the entire trip and the $500 was referencing for a couple on a daily basis. Sorry for the confusion. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

    Outstanding video...one comment about no state income taxes. What you don't pay in state income tax is generally made up in property taxes. The state needs to get that income to pay teachers, firefighters, police, roads and such from somewhere. It's nice to not pay state income tax, but be prepared to receive your property tax bill!

    • @RetirementTravelers
      @RetirementTravelers День тому

      Correct! Except…when you live in a state with high property taxes and high state income taxes such as NY, where we lived in the past. Having no home fixes that for us now, but we know we’ll have to pay when we stop traveling one day. Thanks for contributing! John & Bev

    Our host in Rome provided an extremely small waste basket and expected us to walk two blocks to empty our garbage. When our garbage overflowed the trash can on the last day, the host rated us with a blistering review that Airbnb at first removed, and then reinstated despite pictures from the host that corroborated our waste problem was caused by the host. Terrible Airbnb review policy allowing hosts to blatantly lie about their guests.

    We used AirBnB a few times over the last few years. I think it is only worth it if you are traveling with a big group (friends/family) a maybe to a remote location. If our family of 3 is traveling on our own, I prefer a Bed and Breakfast or a hotel. Honestly the last thing I want to do on vacation is cook, clean and/or make my bed. Plus AirBnB is MORE expensive.. the fees are outrageous, it is NOT convenient and requires lots of communication/interaction with the host... with a hotel... you get there when you get there. If something is wrong with your room, they probably have another one available and reservations and changes are a LOT easier. Nope... hotels are best!

    Question: What about carryon luggage when flying? I was surprised by how big your backpacks are. And I assume they are too big to be carryon on an airplane. So do you check your backpacks every time you fly? If so, then what do you use for carryon?

    Repositioning cruises don't have to cross oceans and be full of sea days. We took a 14 day repositioning cruise on the Carnival Breeze from Galveston Texas to Port Canaveral Florida in 2018, with stops at Grand Cayman, Aruba, Curacao, Grenada, Barbados, Dominica, and St. Maarten for a truly bargain price...and then found $56 one way air fare tickets from Orlando to Houston on Southwest Airlines to get back home. It was a fantastic trip full of destinations and great memories.

    Thanks for your analysis. 40 years ago my wife and I started traveling in England, Wales and Ireland. Every small town had a booking office where you would pay a small fee (or no fee) for a booking agent to ring up a local homeowner who had an extra room in their home to let. Breakfast was always included. We paid about $20/night traveling that way. Fast forward to airbnb ... exorbitant 'service fee,' ridiculous 'cleaning fee,' local tax fee and usually no breakfast. Thanks, but hotels are a better deal by a long shot.

    Going out of country is always a challenge when Americans are used to their luxuries way. There is no other country like America and nothing is as convenient as here. This is what a mindset people should have. We live on another planet with everything easy to have.

      @RetirementTravelers 6 днів тому

      No doubt what you say is true, and we are very mindful of the differences. Travelers need to remember that as they visit other places. Regarding this subject, the problem is more nuanced than simple expectations, we think. Advertising something and not delivering it to the consumer seems to be a bigger issue based on the many comments we've gotten on this subject. Thank you for your thoughts, they are very valid and worth remembering! John & Bev

      We carry a backpack as a carry on, a small backpack as our personal item, and John carries our passports in a fanny pack. We don't know about a stuffable travel pillow because we advocate for a weeks worth of clothes and we just don't need it. Thanks for the question! John & Bev

      @@RetirementTravelers Thanks for the answer! My wife told me when we flew with Southwest, they saw her fanny pack as a personal item and asked her to put it back into the suitcase. A fanny pack!

    I have never stayed in an AirBnB. After watching this, I likely never will.

    I’ve never stayed at an AirBNB. Thanks for the video. No plans to look at their properties either. Too many unknowns. Plus I like a nice swimming pool.

    What a surprise to see you have to walk across the clear panels on the bridge! I really like the river on your hike.

      It was a surprise for us as well. We used to live in Knoxville and love hiking in Smoky Mountains NP. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

    People need to look at their total tax burden & cost of living and not get overly focused on income tax. Many states with no income tax do not have a lower tax burden overall. And don’t let the tax tail wag the dog.

      Great point. We utilize Florida for no income tax, but also don't have the downsides of high property taxes and insurance by not owning a home. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
